Crater Lake - June 2014

The genesis of this trip was to find a place halfway between Portland Oregon and Reno Nevada for meeting our friends John and Terry. It did not take much research to see that Crater Lake would easily fit that criteria. So plans were put in place and we met them at the Visitor Center on June 28th.

None of us had ever been to Crater Lake before so it was a total surprise. It is a truly spectacular place but the most amazing thing is the color of the water.

We all agreed we had never seen this shade of blue before. When you first see it when driving, it is hard to keep the car on the road because it takes your breath away.

Below are some additional photos taken from various points on the rim.

There was still a fair bit of snow around - there were multiple snow fields along the rim with fresh ski tracks from the Earn-Your-Turns crew.

Another example of the unique blue color....

And finally a wide angle view with Diamond Peak in the distance.

We only stayed one day but it was well worth the drive to get there. We will be back next year for some of that late spring skiing.
